Throats bared, our cries choked for want of flowers

And there the armies of wandering assembled

Thirty mighty families erased for want of flowers

Their prayers sent by carrier pigeons and passing ships

Then we burned their ships, a phantom fleet of flowers

From their ashes we grew tall churches by the sea

Crosses high as trees sprung instead of flowers

We surrendered our gloves, scarves, overcoats, and wallets

Pressed with photos of loved ones for want of flowers

The empire’s affliction is the stranglehold of lice

If they had a voice, they’d sound like the violence of flowers

The most florid note is kind of blue we’ve disguised

As longing, a quiet field of undetonated flowers
